Beyond pace, power and heart rate

Three questions worth asking.

Swim, bike, run, and understand the health signals your training app can’t show you.

01 / OXYGEN

What’s behind the fatigue?

Iron stores can fall before hemoglobin does. Ferritin and iron studies add context to oxygen transport, especially with high training volumes, menstrual blood loss or low iron intake.

Ferritin · Iron · TSAT · Hemoglobin

AIS · Iron and athletes ↗
02 / FUELING

Are you fueled to adapt?

Persistently low energy availability can affect reproductive and thyroid function. Hormone results belong beside fueling, symptoms, cycle history and training load, not in isolation.

Thyroid · Sex hormones · Metabolic markers

IOC · 2023 REDs consensus ↗
03 / LONGEVITY

How’s the athlete beyond race day?

Endurance fitness and long-term health overlap, but they aren’t interchangeable. Cholesterol and metabolic markers help you keep the bigger picture in view.

Lipids · ApoB · HbA1c · Liver markers

Research · Olympic athlete risk ↗
Iron ≠ hemoglobin

Endurance bundles include iron stores and transport. Longevity panels add hemoglobin and hematocrit. These answer related questions; neither panel alone is a complete fatigue assessment.

Fitness doesn’t tell the whole story

Keep the long game
in your training plan.

Cholesterol and metabolic health deserve attention even when your training is going well. Your results are a starting point for a conversation, not a prediction of your next race.

32%

of 1,058 Olympic athletes in one study had dyslipidemia, an abnormal blood lipid profile. This was an Olympic cohort across sports, not a triathlete-specific estimate.

Establish a baseline. Make a targeted change. Track your response. Our approach to testing puts your results in context, so you can have a more informed conversation about your health.

Make your baseline worth comparing

The timing matters
as much as the test.

Record the context, follow your kit instructions and aim for comparable conditions when you retest.

A hard session can show up in liver enzymes.

In a small study of 15 healthy men, weightlifting raised AST and ALT for at least seven days. Recent exercise matters when a clinician interprets a result; don’t assume an elevated value is harmless.

Pettersson et al. · 2008 study ↗
  1. Pick a representative day.For a baseline, choose a stable, lighter training period. Avoid collecting immediately after a race or an unusually hard session.
  2. Follow the preparation instructions.Use the fasting and collection guidance for your kit. For iron screening, AIS advises morning collection, hydration and avoiding recent muscle-damaging exercise.
  3. Write down the context.Note your last hard session, illness, sleep, medications and supplements. Don’t stop prescribed treatment to prepare unless your clinician tells you to.
  4. Give hormones their context.Record cycle day and hormonal contraception. Use consistent timing for repeat tests; discuss the right timing for testosterone or progesterone with your clinician.
  5. Make a plan for the result.Persistent fatigue, menstrual changes or a declining training response deserve clinical follow-up. Agree on any further tests and retest timing together.

Simple collection. Clear insights.

From your home
to your next step.

Choose Health handles the testing. Bring your results and training context to a conversation with your clinician.

1

Collect at home.

Endurance bundles and targeted tests use a DBS finger-prick card. Longevity panels use a Tasso device on your upper arm. Follow the instructions supplied with each kit.

2

Send it back.

Use your prepaid return packaging to send your sample to the lab. Keep collection details handy so you can put your results in context.

3

Understand. Act. Retest.

Review your physician-reviewed results in your dashboard. Make a targeted plan with your clinician, then compare future results under similar conditions.

Good questions. Clear answers.

Before you test.

Which option is a useful place to start?
The endurance bundles combine three tests for a broad baseline. A longevity panel covers a different mix, including hemoglobin, hematocrit and creatinine. For a specific concern, review the individual marker lists with your clinician rather than choosing by the number of markers.
Can a panel tell me if I’m underfueled or overtrained?
No single blood panel diagnoses REDs (relative energy deficiency in sport) or overtraining. Results can add evidence, but diagnosis needs the whole picture: symptoms, fueling, training, medical history and clinical assessment.
Do these tests include a full blood count?
No. The longevity panels include hemoglobin and hematocrit, but not the white-cell differential, platelets, MCV or RDW found in a full blood count. The endurance bundles include iron studies, not hemoglobin or hematocrit.
Should I start iron if my ferritin looks low?
Discuss the result and possible causes with a clinician or sports dietitian first. Ferritin can be influenced by inflammation and illness. Iron supplementation should be targeted and monitored; excess iron can be harmful.
How often should I repeat a test?
There is no single schedule for every athlete. Base timing on your results, symptoms, training blocks and any treatment. Use similar collection conditions, and agree on an interval that can meaningfully assess the change you’re making.
